Marché Forville in Cannes

I just love the old market in Cannes which is just a two minute stroll from the apartments and on the edge of the Quartier Suquet. The Marché Forville is the town’s main fruit, flower, and vegetable market and is open every day except Monday when it pretty much turns into an antique market, although even then there are still always a few die-hard fruit and veg sellers where you can search out some great produce. It is not particularly cheap but then very little in Cannes or on the French Riviera is really! I have to say though the market really is one of those special places well worth a visit just for the colours and smells alone.

It is just a beautiful area where you can really enjoy the true Cannoise experience. Not only is the market bursting with the freshest fruit, vegetables, local fish, cheese, olives and cold meats but also a huge array of artisan shops and quality butchers and fishmongers. There are little bars serving a glass of wine and tapas, a caviar and smoked salmon shop, scent-indulging rotisseries and the famous Astoux et Brun oyster restaurant where guys in green overalls seem to be shucking oysters and preparing seafood platters (Fruit des Mer), all day and well into the night.

There are wonderful wine shops and the bread shops (boulangerie) sell specialist Provencal bread and the tastiest croissants. There are also some fab little restaurants serving bouride, aioli, daube and other tasty Provençal specialities.
